Design and build of the Expansion of City O' City in collaboration with Custom by Rushton 2010-2011
For the design and build of City O' City Subsequently Now Productions teamed up with Custom by Rushton. We used 99% reclaimed materials to build and finish the vegetarian/vegan restaurant.
Kitchen, barrista bar and the hostess stand were built by Randy Rushton owner of Custom by Rushton out of a Fruehauf Moving Trailer from 1946. She soda fountain chairs were gathered at a famous junkyard owned by JR. The legendary german band "Einstuerzende Neubauten" once performed at JR's enormous junkyard.
The 8top table was part of Randy's family heritage and his father told the story form Jesse James playing card on that table. The other parts Randy filled in with wood from the Govenor's Mansion he saved from being thrown out.
RECLAIMED LIGHTS
The task lighting for the restaurant including the gooseneck lights above the kitchen area, the 2 double lights and the glass dome lights above the barista area are all salvaged, repurposed and reused lights. The were all fixed up, polished and equipped with Led lights which use barely any wattage.
THE AQUATIC COLLECTION
The decorative lighting for the restaurant was also made out of reclaimed materials. For the small lights we used squirrel cage inserts from fans as the basic design feature to attach the light components to. Those included old typeset-holders used by the Rocky Mountain Seed company to print their seed packages with, old test-tubes, plastic washers and brite lites. The only thing not reclaimed were fiber optics.
To finish the look and the structure of the big chandelier we used aluminum strips fallen of a truck and run over uncountable times by cars. This punched a stunning moire pattern into the metal. The 10, 5 ft long chandelier is lit entirely by the Leds which light up the fiber optics.
All the lights used in this design and build process use less than 45 watts, which is less then a regular light bulb.
The collection includes:
'Sea Cloude' large 10,5ft long, length 6ft, width 30"
'Sea Cloude' small 10,5ft long, length 6ft, width 30"
'Sea Droplets' 7" diameter and 32" long
'Sea Droplets' 10" diameter and 32" long

We developed the concept for COC during a drive to the mountains.
We talked about how we and our friends would find this hidden magical places in our childhood where we could relax and be just by ourselves inspired by what surrounded us.
They were glowing sparkling, lush and full of light. This idea we took as the basis for COC.
We want to create a space an alcove, where people find nourishment for body and soul. It is a magical place where people get together, relax, and find new connections to kindred spirits.
The old established COC represents the night. The new expansion is the day. The kitchen is the center. The kitchen is the sun which is open and radiant.
As the original idea was to have the walls seem like buildings, we decided to push the design elegantly another step forward and give them a new dimension.
All the shapes and organic patterns are describing the language of the future. A future where walls will get transformed literally and symbolically between people and spaces. They are becoming something new something that no one has seen before.
The pieces of metal we use come form the street, from old doors graffited and painted over and over again, patinaed and rusted. Those are the remains of the old structure which we use to build something else and go forward. The metal shapes are cloud-shaped under which the sun (the kitchen) is radiating. The ambiance and the purpose of the whole design is to guide the customers smoothly into a world of fun, freedom, friendship and wonderful food.
